Turn one-time plumbing calls into yearly customers with maintenance plans
Water heater flushes, backflow tests and drain cleaning come back every year. Here's how to make sure the customer calls you, not the next flyer.
Most plumbing revenue is emergency work: you get the call, fix the leak, and never hear from that customer again until something else breaks. Then they search online and call whoever shows up first.
The jobs that repeat themselves
- Annual water heater flushes and anode rod checks.
- Yearly backflow preventer testing for commercial customers.
- Drain cleaning for restaurants every three or six months.
- Sump pump checks before the spring thaw.
- Well pump and pressure tank inspections.
Every one of these is a reason to put yourself back in front of the customer on a schedule, instead of waiting for an emergency.
Track the equipment, not just the customer
When you install a water heater, write down the brand, model, serial number and install date. In eight to ten years, that customer needs a new one, and you'll be the plumber who already knows exactly what's in their basement.
Ask for a Google review on the day of a maintenance visit. Happy, non-emergency customers leave the best reviews.
Start small
Pick one service, like water heater flushes, and offer it to every customer you install a heater for this year. In twelve months you'll have a list of customers who expect to hear from you, and a calendar that fills itself.
